Phil Mickelson fired a thrilling 3-under 67 on Thursday at Merion and was in contention at the conclusion of play on Friday.
This week, Phil is using an X Hot 3Deep Fairway Wood (13°), a Callaway HEX Chrome+ Golf Ball, X Forged Irons (4-PW), two JAWS Wedges (52° and 56°), two new Callaway Mack Daddy 2 Wedges (60° and 64°) and an Odyssey Versa #9 White Putter.
We knew his game was trending in the right direction during his T2 finish last week in Memphis when he played his X Hot 3Deep Fairway Wood off the tee to get ready for Merion. After nearly holing out on the 72nd hole for a chance to win in Memphis, he carried the good play over to Thursday morning where he hit 11 of 14 fairways, made clutch putts and put himself right at the forefront of one of golf’s biggest events.
Lefty was right near the top of the leaderboard on Friday, as was his fellow Callaway staffer Nicolas Colsaerts (1-under 69 on Thursday).
If he ultimately goes on to win this week, this will be Mickelson’s second victory of the year, his 42nd career PGA Tour win and of course his fifth major. There’s a lot of golf still to be played, that much is certain, but it looks like Phil’s not going anywhere.
