Callaway staffer Freddie Jacobson rode his hot Versa Putter to a 6-under 66 and a share of the first round lead, and Phil Mickelson shot 67 to finish just one shot back on Thursday at the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
Jacobson rolled in birdie tries from all over the course and needed just 24 putts on the smooth greens at Doral. He made two eagles on the day and moved to the top of the leaderboard with his HEX Black Tour Ball and Versa #7 Black/White/Black model. Freddie is looking to pick up his second career PGA Tour win and a fourth top-10 in his last five starts.
For Mickelson, a relatively smooth and stress-free day took a back seat to his wild ride of a birdie on 17. After bombing a (admittedly) cart-path aided 450 YARD BOMB, Lefty played a chip shot off the cart path to 9 feet and dropped the birdie putt to move to 5-under. (He says it’s an easy shot. At least it is for him.) He’s right in the mix with a RAZR Fit Xtreme Driver, new X Hot Pro 3-wood and a HEX Black Tour Ball, and he’s getting an X Bomb for his drive on 17.
We expected Freddie and Phil to play well this week, as we brought up in Callaway Pro Picks. For more on all our Tour players, please visit our Staff Pros page.
