Attention to everyone in the Wells Fargo Championship field…
Phil Mickelson is on fire!! You’re all going to need to make birdies, lots and lots of birdies, if you want to keep up with him this weekend. The Callaway Staff Pro looks completely in control of his game from tee-to-green, and he’s doing it on a course that he loves. That’s great news for us and tough news for the rest of the leaders.
Phil came out of the gate strong on Thursday with a smooth opening round 68 and followed it up with a 67 on Friday at Quail Hollow. He took advantage of the par-5s, made almost everything he looked at on the greens, and finished his second round with the outright lead.
The four-time major winner said that his game felt great after a few weeks off and now he’s in prime position to add his second win of the year. The fact that he’s rolling a hot putter only helps his chances.
Mickelson needed just 25 putts during the first round with his Versa #9 White/Black/White gamer in what was essentially an 18-hole “how to” guide on brilliant putting. Through two rounds, he made 31 of 31 putts from inside 10-feet and led the field in strokes gained – putting at +4.58, which is just insane.
He’s also playing the mighty Phrankenwood he put in for Augusta and X Forged Irons. Mickelson has finished 12th or better in seven of his nine appearances at this event, and he’ll tee off in the final group on Saturday.
