X Hot 3Deep Debuts In Houston
The new X Hot 3Deep Fairway Wood made it’s official Tour debut at the Shell Houston Open, where Phil Mickelson actually hit it OVER THE GREEN with 3Deep on a driveable par-4. Lefty has played this new club for a few weeks now and he’s consistently hit it over 300 yards off the tee.
This new fairway wood gives him an option that he can control and it still provides the distance he needs to play aggressively. The golf commentators raved about how long Mickelson hit his 3Deep during the weekend coverage, and they certainly had a point. He’s been ripping this club ever since it went in his bag.
Derived from Tour players’ desire for a deeper faced 3-wood, X Hot 3Deep is available in 13-and 14.5-degree lofts. The Forged Face Cup with the Speed Frame Face increases ball speeds across the face, and the deeper face and lower CG are designed to reduce spin and provide a stronger ball flight. Mickelson has been using a 13-degree model and Ryo Ishikawa played a 14.5-degree version in Houston.
The initial support for X Hot 3Deep has been strong, to the point that it kept our Callaway PGA Tour Rep Mike Sposa extremely busy last week. After a hectic few days of filling orders, Mike took a couple minutes to talk about all the craziness with 3Deep in our new Callaway Tech Talk. He’s obviously excited for this new club and we expect more staffers to play it in the coming weeks.
Tank Wins On The European Tour
Speaking of big debuts, we officially launched the new Odyssey Tank Putters last Friday and on Sunday the Tank #7 took home a big win at the Trophee Hassan II. Available April 12, Tank features specifically weighted components with a Tour preferred balance point for a higher MOI and greater stability through impact. The added weight raises MOI and engages your muscles to promote more of a pendulum stroke that keeps your wrists from breaking down.
Tank has been immediately popular and as our European Tour rep said, “It is early days, but this putter will work well with a player that is searching for help with recognition, dynamic face angle awareness, and improvement in hand speed and pace control.” For more on Tank, check out the home page banner on our Odyssey site.
With Tank’s win on the European Tour, Odyssey leads all putter brands with 12 worldwide Tour victories this year. We also have the fastest growing putter on Tour with our new Versa Putters. It’s been a great season for Odyssey and we can’t wait to see how our putters perform at that major down in Georgia which, by the way, is LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AWAY!
Horsey Finishes T2 In Europe, Larrazabal T4
Callaway staffers David Horsey (T2) and Pablo Larrazabal (T4) both made a great run for the win at the Trophee Hassan II. Horsey used a X Hot Driver (9.5°), RAZR Fit Xtreme 3-wood, HEX Black Tour Ball and an Odyssey Putter to shoot 68-67-70-69. He hit 80.5% of fairways for the week and led the field in putts per round as he posted his second straight top-10 finish. He’s now in 33rd place on the current Race to Dubai standings.
While Horsey played his way near the lead all week, Larrazabal shot up the leaderboard with a 64 on Friday. He played a X Hot Pro Driver (9.5°), X Hot 3-wood, RAZR X Muscleback Irons and the new HEX Chrome+ Golf Ball during the event. Larrazabal has also posted top-10 finishes in back-to-back starts and he looks ready to add a third career European Tour win this season.
Phil Hits Flop Shot Over Roger Cleveland. No Big Deal.
Here’s the understatement of the century: Callaway Chief Designer Roger Cleveland trusts Phil Mickelson’s short game. Not sure what we mean? Take a look at this video where Mickelson hits a flop shot directly over Roger, off a mowed lie no less.
Kudos to Phil for making the shot look so easy, and an even bigger tip of the cap to Roger for staying cool in one of the biggest “I hope this works” moments you’ll ever see on a golf course.
